July Featured Artist: Joanne Gossman |
 |
Joanne was born in Washington, DC and spent most of her youth on the shores of the East Coast. She lives in Kennesaw and is featured in Galleries through out the South. Though primarily self-taught, Joanne has studied with such acclaimed artists as Jeanne Dobie and Wolf Kahn. >"While I may paint ordinary scenes and objects, I often like to infuse them with outlandish color and texture. I am repeatedly drawn to paint objects or landscapes that evoke a sense of solitude or isolation. Perhaps I will leave the viewer with some questions about where and why I painted a subject. I am an avid believer in the value of art as a window to the soul." If you would like to nominate an Artist of the Month info@georgiaartexchange.org

"It is always your next move." -- Napoleon Hill "We cannot tell what may happen to us in the strange medley of life. But we can decide what happens in us -- how we can take it, what we do with it -- and that is what really counts in the end." -- Joseph Fort Newton "When a defining moment comes along, you can do one of two things. Define the moment, or let the moment define you." -- Tin Cup (the movie) "If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice." -- Neil Peart

July Recipe:Cheesecake Brownies |
 |
Cheesecake Brownies Ingredients 1 package (21 ounces) brownie mix, batter prepared according to package directions 2 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese, softened 2 eggs 2 tablespoons sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Directions Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 9" x 13" baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Spread half of the brownie batter into the baking pan. In a medium-sized bowl, with an electric beater on medium speed, combine the cream cheese, eggs, sugar, and vanilla until fluffy. Spoon over the brownie batter, then top with the remaining half of the brownie batter. Using a table knife, cut through the batter and swirl to create a marbled effect. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a wooden toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow to cool, then cut into bars and serve, or cover and chill until ready to serve. LOOKING OVER HER SHOULDER: THE ART OF LOIS CURTIS IN "ARTS FOR ALL" GALLERY
"Atlanta, GA – The artwork of Lois Curtis will be featured in a solo exhibition of remarkable original creations by this native Atlanta artist.
The exhibit opens on Tuesday, July 3, 2007 and continues on view through Friday, August 24, 2007.
Ms. Curtis, a self-taught artist, spent much of her life as a resident in various state-operated institutions. Following denial of her repeated requests to live in the community, Ms. Curtis initiated a lawsuit against the state of Georgia and in 1999 her case came before the U.S. Supreme Court. A landmark decision in her favor declared, "unnecessary institutionalization amounts to segregation and is a violation of individual civil rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act." Her case thus established a national mandate to free tens of thousands of people with disabilities from institutionalization.
Today, Ms. Curtis receives community-based support and enjoys her life outside the confines of institutional living. Her artistic talent and skill, and her passion for creativity have motivated her to make art and advocacy her life work. Her artwork often takes the form of portraits of individuals she knows and interacts with regularly. Executed in pastels and acrylics, they are heartfelt and bold expressions of how deeply she values her personal relationships, often capturing intense emotions with simple lines and vivid colors.
"I feel good about myself. Sometimes, I put my mind on the earth and go to the future where my art pictures are on the wall. People would love to see my pretty art pictures because they will take them to heaven and hug them
forever." ~ Lois Curtis
